This course introduces students to the language, grammar, and vocabulary necessary to read and work with medieval Latin primary sources. The course has been redesigned for synchronous online instruction and integrates authentic medieval Latin texts throughout.

The first half of the course focuses on developing foundational grammatical skills and a core vocabulary based on the frequency of words in medieval Latin sources. Students will apply these skills through short excerpts from primary sources, allowing them to encounter the language in its historical context from the beginning of the course. The second half of the course builds on this foundation through increasingly sustained engagement with longer passages from a range of medieval Latin primary sources, enabling students to develop their ability to read and interpret the language more comprehensively.
